After an open call to emerging Irish artists, 126 has put together an exhibition which highlights a diverse and vibrant contemporary arts scene in Ireland.
Working in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, video and photography, 11 artists chosen for inclusion in the exhibition have responsed to the title of the show with a range of interpretations that are critical, personal and humorous. The resulting pieces comment on a term which is loaded in the context of the island of Ireland’s recent and current history, and its relationship with the UK and Europe, as well as taking a more ambiguous and international approach to the idea of place and life on the fringe.
126 was established in 2006 by a group of artists in their own living room, as a response to the need for more non-commercial gallery spaces in Galway, and is currently located on Queen Street in the city centre. 126 is a voluntarily led, artist-run gallery that is known for promoting challenging and experimental works that would not be seen in commercial galleries or conventional institutions. 126 is supported by the Arts Council, the Galway City Council and its membership.
